Updated my 5G iPod to 1.2, loaded Quadrophenia, and yes, there is FINALLY gapless. :D

so you have to re-rip any albums that are affected by the gapless feature?

Tell you what Apple. Make a 128GB iPhone and I'll pay *you* for it, rather than paying my service provider for the extra downloads (that I can't even do when I'm on the Underground, or in much of my office building, or abroad on holiday...)

You can already buy 64GB phones (http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxys2/html/specification.html) Apple. Don't get left behind.

I have to pay an extra $10 and that goes where?
First of all, you don't have to do anything.

Second, have you been reading this thread at all?

The "step forward" of which you speak, of which is the basis of this article, is only in regards to the exterior design, nothing else. Sure if they improve upon the durability and the ease of servicing, that'll be a decent step forward, otherwise, we're talking about cosmetics, and again while most of the people who lurk these forums care about form over function, function is all that matters and it won't be that different next rev, redesign or not.

Herp derp. Im pretty sure there will be a minor spec bump as well, and exterior design in a laptop is a pretty important feature or a "function and should be taken in consideration just as well (or not even more) than a new "ixy procesor" and a "8650 gt mx" graphics card, which in most cases just serve as a hard on for spec geeks.

why am i even responding you are clearly bitter and are writing purely from that bitterness.

Don't worry, Windows 8 will be even better. Its going to have a built in PDF reader called "Modern Reader." Too bad Linux and OSX have had built in PDF readers for a decade now. Typical Microsoft, "if you can't beat them, copy them!"

    ROFLMAO

Because Apple lost? Yes, patent-system IS messed up. But Apple is taking advatange of it as well. Now that Apple lost, everybody complains, yet no-one complains when Apple files for obvious patents as well.

Ummm, Apple didn't lose. Settling is not "losing" in any legal sense.

I went into it in detail in my earlier post, but basically, Apple is happily giving Creative the teeth it needs to go after Sandisk, iRiver, and most importantly Zune.

Remember, as a result of this settlement, Creative is heavily incentivized to extract payment from every wannabe iPod killer in existence while agreeing not to so much as give Apple a dirty look any more. In fact, as Creative successfully collects licensing fees, it begins to pay Apple back.

It sounds like a $100 million loan to me.

1984 is not happening because companies and the government spies on you but because of people that are saying: "So what? It's not a big issue."

It'd be happening even if people were pissed off about CCTV and the like.

The USB 2.0 ports will be simply be upgraded to USB 3.0 ports - count on it once the chipsets only support USB 3.0.

ThunderPort is going to be far more expensive than USB 3.0 - USB will stay king for most devices (those needing 100 MB/sec or less). ThunderPort will be a high end special purpose connector for RAID-arrays, breakout boxes, eSATA/USB 3.0 hubs, docking stations, specialized audio/video equipment.

Just like cheap, ubiquitous USB 2.0 killed 1394a and 1394b in the marketplace (and killed FW1600 and FW3200 in the womb), USB 3.0 will be fine for the tasks that most people have.

I doubt anyone purchasing a MacBook Pro or iMac won't be able to wait a bit longer when transferring files, actually. Which makes me wonder why Apple put them in, instead of USB 3.0, if it's that cheaper, and still that fast. I do realize that I am somewhat contradicting myself now.
I am sure I won't be needed thunderbolts transferring speeds, ever.

Environmental activist group Greenpeace was ejected from London's Mac Expo yesterday, after various other exhibitors complained about the group's activities at the show.

The group had purchased a small both with contract terms to only hand out leaflets within their assigned area and to not take photographs at other stands. The Register got in touch with MacExpo marketing director Matt Denton (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/10/26/greepeace_ejected_from_mac_expo/print.html) who said "It was a valid stand with a valid message... they breached their contract."

Greenpeace does not deny having passed out fliers beyond their booth (http://weblog.greenpeace.org/makingwaves/archives/2006/10/we_love_our_macs_but_mac_expo.html), but insists that the reaction was "over the top" in a statement to MacRumors. Greenpeace is vowing to return to the expo tomorrow to continue their 'Green my Apple (http://www.greenmyapple.org)' campaign.

Greenpeace recently rated Apple the 4th worst tech company in their guide to greener electronics (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060829114739.shtml).

Same here, although I'd probably just get a current Macbook if that's the case. I decided I won't wait beyond Paris Expo.

Although I might still be tempted to buy a MBP if Apple offered a 160GB hd for a reasonable or it were easy to put one in there.

Same here. I'm not waiting beyond Paris, but I won't be able to afford an MBP, unless I bought the current models on eBay proceeding an update.

Ugh... it would just be so much simpler if Apple "revealed their hand" all at once so i knew where I stood. No point in delaying a MB update, it's already been out longer than the average MBP cycle.

What phone you have? The newer quad band phones get great service in and out of urban areas using Cingular.
Quad band has nothing to do with getting service in the US. A dual band phone will get you all the service you ever need in the USA. The 2 extra bands in "quad band" are ones used outside of the US.

last three macbook pro updates were:

    june of 2009
    april of 2010
    february of 2011
so... next is december of 2012... or if it takes even longer it would be jan-feb 2012

though i don't think that it will take longer than 10 months

because before the last three updates they were updated even more often than 10 months.

getting the back to school deal with a free ipod touch is really tempting... but.... so is a redesign

Better idea: add an ExpressCard slot so I can put eSATA or USB3 on my iMac. Or you know...put USB3 & eSATA on my iMac for me *hint hint Apple*

You can have an eSATA port added to an iMac through OWC for $169:

Not what i was looking for
I wanted a smart phone wheres the keyboard ?
i can buy an itunes phone right now from cingular but i dont want one
what makes them think i will buy one now because its from apple and not motorola

But you just have to know that any "Apple" phone is gonna have a darn good user interface.. and that's what I'm hoping for.. almost regardless of over all shape and design, but Apple's UI. When compared with a compatible 'Itunes" phone anyway. Pretty sure I don't want a phone with a keyboard on it. but I understand why some might.

What is it with the 24"? I would like to see something larger than 27 (as I have 30" already). Mini refresh would be nice - then I'd keep my 30".
They need to do it soon or people will wait for Lion before upgrading their hardware.

I think this is totally feasible, but one question that many of you haven't addressed is: "Do you see this interaction and interface happening for the Windows users?"

I know we're all Apple fans here, but in order for the iTunes Movie Store to be successful, it will have to include "them."

    w00master

I agree completely. iTunes was ported to Windows to sell more iPods, and music. The iMovie Store (or whatever) will be included for Windows to sell more video iPods and Airport AV (or whatever it will be called). The living room box will have to play nice with PCs in order for this whole thing to have the same impact as the iTMS/iPod.

It may just be time for Front Row to be ported to Windows too. Wouldn't that just chafe Gates' butt?

Exactly. Which is why the Ghz myth will stay for a long time. You can't market Memory or FSB or SATA or PCI-X/PCI-E, you won't get anywhere.

Ghz, GB, "X times faster", and you can play games that look very pretty. Those will be what computer marketing will be all about for many years to come.Yeah, the GHz made sense to me until AMD started pulling this XXXX+ naming. Then I realized it. It worked pretty much until Intel gave up on clock speed is the THING when it comes to computing power.

I didn't buy a new computer between 1999 - 2003 so I had a lot of catching up to do.

Hilarious to all those people who jumped on the THUNDERBOLT bandwagon. No thunderbolt devices yet and they have the hideous old case design.

Maybe people bought a computer because they needed it? And the case is far from ugly, give me a break. I want to say more but I am going to hold my tongue.

Apple goes to all sorts of lengths to protect media files with FairPlay, yet they don't care about stuff like this. Shows where their focus is; protecting their own stuff and not giving a flying f--- about the user.

So why doesn't Apple's main screen lead with the new iMac? It still shows white iPhone. Kind of telling, eh? It's almost like they're ashamed to let people know that a phone/tablet maker also churns out computers on the side.

Get 'em while you can folks before they get of the business. :D

Oh well, there goes all my enthusiasm... Thunderbolt is dead.

USB 3 is slower, uglier, more gummed up with kruft but the masses are comfortable with it so everything will use it. Thunderbolt will go the way of FireWire.

    Ugh.

    BenRoethig

Yeah, we all knew this was coming. It will be interesting to see how quickly Apple responds to its competition and follows suit. Hopefully very soon, I'm eager to see what exactly Apple does, i.e. only updates the MBPs, updates the whole MacBook line, updates the Mini as well...

Oh, and how about some Conroe iMacs? ;) :D

I think there's a better chance of Merom iMacs. We're talking about a system in which they underclock a mobility Radeon x1600 to make it quieter. Conroe makes sense in a regular desktop, but I dont see it happening with the iMac.
