Duff-Man says....have a look at Apple's Logic Express (http://www.apple.com/logicexpress/) or if you want the top-of-the-line pro software there is Logic Pro (http://www.apple.com/logic/) or Mark of the Unicorn's Digital Performer (http://www.motu.com/) ...also, don't overlook Apple's Garageband (http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/) that comes as part of the $49 iLife suite....oh yeah!

The longer you keep hold of it, the less people will have a Mac that will require the older card (as they upgrade, they'll be wanting an Airport extreme card, or whatever comes along next to replace it).

Your best bet is probably just to pop it in the post to me it'll go nicely with my G3 iBook. I won't charge you anything for taking it off your hands, seeing as how it's Christmas. :p

Sounds like a lot of us are waiting for a serious MBA update in terms of Sandy bridge etc.

Hope it comes before the end of the year. Summer would be nice, I'll get it with my iPhone 5.

Why should Ferrari put good tires on their cars?

Just think about it; here's a company championing (used to, anyway) their music player and how great the experience was, but then at the same time made sure that the final product (the music that enters your head) sounds like total ass because of 10 cent headphones they include with their premium product.

Same thing applies to Ferrari--why build an awesome car that's made for great performance, and then put 10 cent tires on it, resulting in a poor final product in terms of end-user experience?

A premium music player is useless without good headphones, just as a premium car is useless without good tires.

Putting crappy headphones in the box of a premium priced/marketed product is an oxymoron, and a bit of an insult to the consumer. And spare the "Oh but that would cost too much for the consumer", because that wouldn't exactly flow with everyone praising a $6B profit quarter.

What would be the alternative? Put some Dr. Dre head phones in the box and have the iPod cost $80 more? To what end?

Very few people care about the quality of the headphones that come with iPods. For those that do, they can buy nice set of headphones and not worry about the 10 cent ones that Apple puts in the box.

If Apple put in a half decent set of headphones and increased the price by, say $20, the folks that want even better headphones would complain that they have to pay an extra $20 for headphones they'll never use.

    Justification for DRM
I understand the need for DRM. Apple would never be able to sell us all that great music without the DRM. I have no problem with the DRM. I think it's fair. If I were an artist, I wouldn't want to make it so easy for people to freely distribute my music royalty-free. If a million people like my song enough to own a copy, then I should see a million payments on it. That's fair.

Not as good for Apple as it would seem
A long time ago, Jobs stated that the goal of the iTunes Music Store wasn't to turn a profit, but to market iPods. By providing a easy-to-use, cheap, legal way to sell iPod-compatible music, Apple is able to sell more iPods. It has clearly worked like a charm.

So you're asking "well, if other websites can sell iTunes-compatible DRM protected music, it will sell more iPods too, right?" Well technically yes; You're right. But let me ask you this; what separated the Apple User Experience from most? What sets Mac OS X apart from other OS's, or the iPod apart from other MP3 Players? What makes the iTunes Store so much more popular than any other online music service?

The answer: Approachability. A quick learning curve, ease of use, simplicity, elegance, suave, charm, style. Apple's core marketing gimmick, the reason Apple is still around today, the reason the Apple experience is unique is because Apple maintains strict control over their user's experience, and they make the experience as pleasant as possible. Forr example, it's one of the specific reasons Jobs cited for killing off the Apple-licensed clone machines (back in the day).

Now, we all know Real. I don't know many people who can honestly tell me that they've had an overall easy or pleasant experience with Real. Their software media player is nearly a trojan horse, their tech support is abysmal, their website is obnoxiously hideous, etc. And they're one of the better alternatives. If vendors other than Apple have the ability to peddle DRM-protected music for the iPod, then Apple loses a bit of control over the iPod User Experience.

    It might get ugly
Suddenly vendors start changing the rules, right under Apple's nose. Instead of the simple .99 pricing, maybe it's tiered pricing, arbitrarily set up by the folks in charge to make an extra buck, but it confuses/aggrivates the end-user. (and maybe record labels like the better bottom-line & start selling exclusively with Vendor B rather than Apple, thus the Music Store loses marketability). There's no quality-control. Vendors can start ripping less-than perfect copies of the music (or worse, music laced with ads!), market it as "ipod compatible" unsuspecting users buy it & the iPod experience diminishes. In short, Apple loses control.

I've been an Apple user since childhood. I've followed the company closely. I can tell you one thing with certainty. They do not like to lose control of their end-user experience.

DVD Jon may think he's doing us all a favor, and maybe in a shortsighted way he is, but ultimately he's spoiling Apple's marketing strategy & thus risking the iPod's position as the top MP3 Player in market share. The DRM isn't his to license. Hopefully his scheme will be fruitless.

That is correct. I've subscribed to their tethering plan but the personal hotspot item doesnt show up under settings/network. I'm guessing at this point that something about the jailbreak is suppressing this - or perhaps the mywi install?

    I'd call up AT&T.
They might need to reset your accounts tethering access.

The retail discs will work in all Macs (assuming they meet the basic requirements of the OS), while the grey system restore discs are only for the specific model, i.e., you can't use a grey iMac restore disc on a Mac Mini or Power Mac, even if it is the same OS version.

I have a very convoluted home network. The route from Internet to my current primary system is:
    Cable Modem --100MbitEthernet--> AirPort Extreme-n --WiFi-n--> AirPort Extreme-n --GigabitEthernet--> MacBook

When I do a speed test over Ethernet, I get 20-25 Mbps. (This is traveling over 802.11n WiFi to cross the house from one AirPort base to a second.) When I do the same speed test over 802.11g WiFi, connecting to the primary base station, 3 feet away from it, I get 10 Mbps.

That configuration could also be your issue. Each Wi-Fi link is only half duplex, so any packet you send can cause the receiving packets to slow (i.e. collisions). Running from one AP is likely not going to have the same impact.

Drop resistance is important for me. A drop will happen eventually onto a hard surface, I want to make sure it does not affect my phone at all.

It would need to be sleek though and not too thick.

    How is the otterbox commuter?

The commuter is not what most people would call "sleek"

I have the Switcheasy TRIM and it has protected the phone from many 5ft drops.. yet maintaining a clean look

I remember when I played with the last gen MBA in the Apple Store; my thought was that this thing was TOO light. I just couldnt get into it. Then there was also the price. Yikes. Then I played with the new gen 11 recently, and I was all like ooooooooo. Still an 11 display is too small for my needs, so if I really feel the need for ultra portable second machine, I think an iPad will do. As far as the horsepower ting goes, I have no idea if Im a power user or not. I know Im definitely not a light user. I have a habit of having a dozen applications each with multiple windows/tabs open including the life sucking Safari as well as Photoshop, huge amounts of photos open at once, and editing video.

I've never understood the argument against the Air because of it's lack of DVD drive. I have no idea when the last time was I used mine, and it takes up a massive amount of space and weight on my MacBook.

I use the OD on my MBP often as I author a lot of disks, but when Apple inevitably drops the OD, I really dont plan on coming unglued. I can always get an external OD, and since I do the burning at home, its not like Ill have to lug it around.

I'm totally pro-GPS imprints on photos, but we're eating up technology that has two very different sides to it potentially.
