Curious that everyone is clamoring for a thunderbolt-enabled machine, but there isn't a single thunderbolt drive available on the market.

I guess some people just need to feel like they have new stuff even if it's totally pointless.

Pointless right now, but what about in 6 month? The price of the iMac will just be the same then but it is very likely some TB displays and external storage device have been released. So why not by now and wait for the TB peripherals?

Plugging in one cable to connect and external monitor while daisy chaining multiple external storage sources is far from pointless to me...

    http://images.macrumors.com/article/2011/03/22/140815-imacs_2010.jpg

As tracked in our Buyer's Guide (http://www.macrumors.com/buyersguide/#iMac), the iMac has reached its average update interval, suggesting that we might be able to expect refreshed models to appear some time in the relatively near future. Expectations for revamped iMacs include a move to Sandy Bridge processors and implementation of the new Thunderbolt connectivity standard that debuted in the MacBook Pro last month.

In a series of Tweets (via MacNews.de (http://www.macnews.de/mac/imac-update-teil-2-mai-thunderbolt-sandy-bridge-160029)), CNET's Brian Tong claims (http://twitter.com/brian_tong/status/50234343263707136) to have received word from a reliable source (http://twitter.com/brian_tong/status/50234696809984000) that new iMacs should debut in late April or early May. The updated iMacs are said (http://twitter.com/brian_tong/status/50234522251444224) to feature Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt as expected, but no major cosmetic changes are reported to be included.iMac rumors have been relatively sparse in recent months, although DigiTimes indicated (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/12/15/imac-and-macbook-pro-upgrades-in-first-half-of-2011/) in mid-December that Apple was expected to update both the MacBook Pro and iMac in the first half of 2011 with the iMac featuring a new panel size and price points. Just days before the MacBook Pro update in late February, DigiTimes reiterated its claim (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/02/22/apple-to-update-imac-alongside-or-soon-after-macbook-pro/) that may change the screen size on new iMacs, claiming that the new models could debut alongside or soon after the MacBook Pros.

Article Link: Potential iMac Update to Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt in 4-6 Weeks? (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/22/potential-imac-update-to-sandy-bridge-and-thunderbolt-in-4-6-weeks/)

More surprising than this rumor is the fact that it's the first actual MAC rumor (beyond "we've found that the Early 2011 MacBook Pros have quirks" posts) in weeks. None of that is surprising though. I wonder if there will be any surprises with this refresh? I'm guessing no Blu-Ray, which means I'm not buying one. Though I'm still curious as to what'll be under the hood.

The MBPs could have DisplayPort 1.2 if it were not for the damned connector merge.

The mini-display port connector is part of the DisplayPort 1.2 standard and is seemingly seeing wide adoption from PC laptop and display makers.

The DisplayPort 1.2 specification requires support for DisplayPort 1.1a on mini-display ports, but I don't see anything that precludes it supporting 1.2 signalling.

Can you point to an article that details how Thunderbolt is a problem for this? The Thunderbolt controller, when connected to a DisplayPort 1.2 (only) display, could fall back to DisplayPort mode like it does now, could it not?

Intel should have stood their ground on Thunderbolt... Would have pushed component manufacturers to make more Thunderbolt devices, now we're going to have a mish mash, and those of us with Macs are getting the shaft because we won't get USB 3.0 from Apple...

I wish they had announced that IvyBridge was USB 2.0 only, but this delays USB 3.0 adoption by a year.

There's been strong support for Thunderbolt, so that year might be enough to kill USB 3.0, which hasn't exactly taken off.

Anyone else voting that they drop the price on the BlackBook to match the white MB? What are the chances, eh?

It's tough for Apple to justify the higher price to begin with, so, in their minds, why should they bother justifying a price cut? :p ;) :D

So with those numbers, a 720p stream with 5.1 audio should easily stream over even a 10 mbit network device. So I can easily see this working over 802.11g.

Your numbers are good but you assume 10mbps is easy with 802.11g because they advertise '54mbps' on the box.

In practice, you see half of that max, right next to the access point, without protocol overhead.

By time you get half way across a typical house from Mac to TV, you're lucky to see 3-4mpbs. I've tried this using 5-600kbps codecs and current wireless just doesn't cut it outside the lab.

That kind of reduction ratio on 802.11n is going to be fine for h.264 streaming. Apple won't wait a whole 'nother year for the standards committees to get their act in gear. When the chipset manufacturers are certain the shipping silicon will handle the release spec, Apple will release a pre-n unit. The stuff that was on the shelves last year probably is going to wind up not being upgradeable to the standard, due to silicon changes, so they were wise to wait. The timing is right.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, someone reply to my post....
as a person who just purchased the last version of 5gen video ipod, this comes to me as quite a shock really.... i knew this was coming but actaully hoping that it was everything 'rumor' but turns out it's not.....

    anyway, my point is:

WHY DIDN'T STEVE MENTION 30 GIG IPOD, WHILE MOST OF THE ATTENTION SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN FOCUSED ON 8O GIG SOLELY??

although 30 and 80 seem to share most of the new features which are obviously crap(game? who plays that? and search bar? i don't need that crap, too shabby, biatch)
but the thing is BATTERY, gosh

they've plugged about how their new 80 gen has total 20 hrs of battery life and 6.5 hrs of video play, but what about freaking 30???? I SERIOUSLY WANNA KNOW.

i've been to apple store and engadget for live broadcast, but there was no info whatsoever on 30's battery, other than its MAXIMUM battery was 14.... the thing i wanna know is its VIDEO MAXIMUM BATTERY.... is it, again 2 hours? i hope so!! cause i just bought this ol' **** at such higher price and now i feel totally duped. well it was my fault in the first place but i thought it was all RUMOR......................GAWD

Did you fall asleep watching it? He started the dicussion on battery life WITH the 30gb model and explained the improvement there before mentioning the 80gb. True, the 80gb was discussed a tad bit more, but the wrap up on price, songs held, display brightness AND batttery life watching video covered the 30gb.

Edit: I stand corrected on what's on the site. You're right about that. Even in the detailed comparison only music battery life is compared. Of course, you could simply compare that spec and get a ratio you could apply. A 30gb should have 4.55 hours of video capacity.

Wow, can't believe some of the posts on here!

Its a limited edition iPod and by buying it, it looks like a donation will be made to a charitable organisation set up by people who are trying to make a difference, which wants to help people less fortunate than us. Where's the problem?

I am quite sure that the software writers will take full advantage of the current hardware.
Isnt it normally so, that apps push the evolution of the hardware?

Some applications just can't be multithreaded and writing reliable multi threaded applications is damned hard still.

Back in the early 90s I was using ICL DAPs which had a grid of 1024 CPUs. You could fly through a Mandlebrot set in realtime or analyse weather patterns quicker than anything else at the time short of a couple of Crays. A Mac SE/30 however was quicker at handling files and we used to use that to handle the normal stuff.

I'm very happy about the gapless playback, and battery life, but generally all these updates are pretty disappointing.

Pretty much sums up my mood hours afterwards. At the time, I was flaming pissed/disappointed. I'm pretty much utterly disappointed by this event.

But this iPod was almost "expected," from a business standpoint. Full screen iPod and iPhone; anything short of a 60/120GB iPod lineup and I'll see it as a huge letdown.

    Steve's pre-Holiday event's bar is set at infinity +1.

    I blame the no-show turtleneck sweater. :D

What about the screen? Are they finally moving to 16:9 screens?

I hope not - retaining the 16:10 aspect ratio is one thing I really admire about Apple's notebooks. (11inch Air aside)

16:9 displays are cheaper to manufacture, but from a usability/aesthetic point of view 16:10 is superior IMO. Vertical space is at a premium, particularly on a laptop screen. Also, 16:10 is pretty darn close to the golden ratio...

I was thinking of buying an iPod Shuffle for my niece for Xmas but she'll be getting something else instead.

I'm sure your niece will be proud of you too, once she can understand why you did what you did.

What, exactly, is there to be proud of? Taking an uninformed or misguided stand is not something to trumpet.

As an environmentalist I am extremely pissed at Greenpeace and all the other fear mongerers out there that spread lies and hyperbole in order to "force" people to believe in their righteous campaigns.

As someone working in the marketing industry it pains me to see such useless posturing which, in the end, may win over a few fanatics but, most importantly, alienates the general public.

Actually making an impact on the environment would not be terribly difficult if groups like Greenpeace weren't putting off the average person from having a proper discussion on the issues that could actually make a difference. I'm talking about energy conservation over, say, inconsequential amounts of BFRs.

This is the GUI wars all over again... Last time Apple sued Microsoft for copying their GUI desktop to make Windows....

(and no Xerox didn't invent that they invented windowing not really a desktop Apple did that bit.)

Anyway Apple lost and Microsoft took over the world while Apple dwindled to a market share of less than 5%.

I don't think they want that to happen this time....

Dump AT&T and get something that offers unlimited data without threats. If they change your plan I believe that is a breech in contract and you are free to look for another carrier.

Capitalism rules in our society, money in this case speaks louder than words to AT&T. Finally we have another option, Verizon.
LMAO...are you serious? You find another carrier in the US that has unlimited data and has the iPhone?. Don't say Verizon because Verizon has already stated the unlimited plans were TEMP and only to draw in new customers at the launch of their iPhone. They made clear, those plans will be going away.

Normally, I would say I could go either way with the optical drive. But lately, I have been having to burn a lot of CD's and DVD's for people. I would be willing to give up the optical drive for a second hard drive in a MBP. I would want a thunderbolt quad core with 4gb ram. I need a min of 750gb in hard drive space.

If the price of SSD was not so high, I would look into an AIR. A 13-inch quad core air with 4gb ram would be sweet. I just priced out what I would need in an AIR (but drive still too small) and it comes to the price of just getting a MBP.

If I had the money for that I would have jumped on that the second it came out. I seriously thought about getting the MBA a month ago but didn't have the funds for it at that time. I could have waited until this summer but I found a good deal on a blackbook and ended up getting that.

In the future I'll definitely see how they hold up compared to other computers.
